Casting @ NYScreenwriters.org!
March 14, 2010 Posted by tdomf_37c99
NYScreenwriters.org is a respected workshop for writers who meet
every other Monday evening in midtown Manhattan to have
their screenplay pages performed and critiqued. The workshop
is entirely free, but we maintain high standards for membership
(as described on our Web page at www.NYScreenwriters.org)-
We invite four actors (two male, two female) every session to participate in the workshop’s cold readings. If you came in, you and the other performers would be assigned virtually all of each movie’s roles (with any remaining characters tossed like crumbs to the group’s writers…). You’d have only about a minute to look over each script, so would need to make to make smart, bold acting choices in moments and commit to them. Not easy; but that’s part of the challenge and the fun.
After the cold reading is completed, we all offer comments on
the pages, and the author asks any questions he or she might have.
We typically workshop acts from three screenplays- in-progress
per session, so you’d get to play a number of wildly different
characters back to back.
No pay. But it’s an enjoyable way to stretch acting muscles;
to practice sub-zero cold readings; and to meet a bunch of
sharp writers and writer/directors. We’ve found this process
generates a wonderful energy for everyone in the workshop,
and has also led to collaborations outside of the group.
We’re seeking highly talented performers who enjoy being
playful and have deep experience in any media (though
experience in theatre, improv, and/or voiceover is especially
helpful given the nature of these spontaneous live performances) .
If you’d enjoy performing on the spot from script pages
just handed to you, we’d love to receive your headshot,
resume, phone number, and any other pertinent info.
Slots are limited and competitive, so we can’t reply to
most messages; but we carefully examine, and genuinely
appreciate, every email received.
To learn more about the workshop, please visit our
Web page at www.NYScreenwriters.org; and then
contact via email.
Again, if you have substantial acting experience, and
would get a kick out of tackling a wide range of juicy
characters on the fly (not to mention, experiencing the
material you just performed then getting torn to
shreds by our writers), we’d love to hear from you!
